Julie Hedlund (Write Up My Life blog) has an entry in the MeeGenius contest that you should really check out! For those of you that don’t know, this September MeeGenius, an online book publisher started a contest to find “The Next Great Children’s Book Author.”
Ms. Hedlund’s book is called “A Troop Is A Group of Monkeys.” It is a picture book that names all sorts of animal groups, like a troop of monkeys.
Here is a part of her blog post explaining about the idea behind her book –
“I’d heard of a pack of wolves, a herd of buffalo and a pride of lions. But a float of crocodiles? An ostentation of peacocks?”
I personally like “A Quiver of Cobras”!
You can read more about Ms. Hedlund’s book on her blog by clicking HERE.
You can also read (and vote for) “A Troop is A Group of Monkeys” at the MeeGenius website by clicking on the badge below.
There are some very inventive stories at MeeGenius!

I’ve already voted for Julie’s stories and they’ll only let you vote once per story! It’s a great idea, though, and I hope she wins 🙂 It’s very nice of you to help spread the word!
It is a good story isn’t it!
Great review! I love “animal group” names, so I’ll have to take a look at this book. Does she mention “a murder of crows” or “a crash of rhinos”?
Those are two good ones Mr. Davis and ones I never heard of before! They aren’t in the book, maybe there should be A Troop Of Monkeys Book 2!
I had both of those in an earlier version, but I cut those couplets because I had to shorten the length to meet MeeGenius standards. But those are two very good ones indeed.
Others left on the cutting room floor – a mob of kangaroos, a gaze of raccoons…
Wow! A mob of kangaroos and a gaze of racoons. Great! Wish I could see what else had to be cut–or maybe you’ll write a sequel. Good luck!
Who comes up with these official group names? They’re wild!
They are wild! To tell you the truth, I don’t know who came up with them. Wouldn’t it be fun to come up with your own?!?
Erik
Wow Erik, thank you so much for writing about my story! I definitely hope I get to write sequels. I did a lot of research and have TONS more collective nouns I could write about! 🙂
Thanks again for sharing my story. You’ve made my day – my week!
I’m glad you like the post because I sure like your book! A book 2 would be cool!
