Smout McManus is a quiet kid who likes to read books. He isn’t really popular at school. In fact, he was recently stuffed into Rory Bruce’s locker by the school bully, Maddagh Donaldson. Smout was a bit confused when he received a mysterious package from his archeologist Uncle at his school. Smout didn’t know what to think when he opened the package. What he found was an old key. After an unfortunate food fight incident in the lunch-room, Smout find himself in detention with Rory, Maddagh (or Mad Dog), Bogey (who has a gross habit) and Emma, the victim of the food fight. While in detention the other kids find out about the key and Smout finds out that his Uncle has gone missing. When Smout shows the other kids the key out, they also find part of a treasure map! The group decides to band together and go on a big treasure hunt for the treasure that Smout’s uncle had laid out clues for them to follow. Unfortunately for them, they find out pirates really do exist and the kids are not the only ones searching for the treasure!
This was an action-packed book! There were pirates, kidnappings, and chases! Smout is a great character and he is very believable to me. I like that he likes to read. I thought it was cool how he was thrown together with kids from school he wouldn’t normally be with and they had to work together. I like Ms. Falgoust’s writing style and that she wrote an exciting adventure that is appropriate for middle grade readers. I also liked that I learned more about Robert Louis Stevenson from this book.
I give this book 5 out of 5 book worms!

Ooohhh…you had me at pirates 🙂
Arr! And they be scurvy pirates, that they be! Arr! (whatever “scurvy pirates” are 😉 )
Erik, I love the chance you give to self-pubbed titles. It can be a chore to dig for them, but there are some real gems out there.
There are some great ones out there! 🙂
Darn. I appreciate that self-publishing can give to help stories shine, but I hope to be able to read this sometime too.
This is a great book! 😀
I bet!
😀
This looks just great! Excellent video! Who wouldn’t want to read it?
This is an AWESOME book! 😀
I really enjoyed this one as well. And I agree – it is definitely written for a middle grade audience (and I like that!)
😀
Starting out your life with the name Smout seals your fate in becoming a target for bullies. But, that certainly is reversed with the map. What an action-packed book with many twists and turns. Loved the video — shouts out to the author.
Well, technically Smout’s name is Colin, but Smout is his nickname. 🙂
Sounds like a great swashbuckling ride, Erik.
Thanks Ms. Johnson – it is! 😀
That’s a really cool trailer! And a cool cover! And sounds like a cool adventure! Thanks for the cool review!
It IS a cool trailer, Rhythm! Hey, you live in Glen Rose, Texas right? Well, in Roland Smith’s new book, “Chupacabra” (to be released in October), the bad guy plans to loose a Chupacabra in… Glen Rose, Texas! Be on the look-out Rhythm! Keep your humans inside! 😉
Oh No!! That’s a scary thought! I’ll have to read that book. I’ve heard of Chupacabra, but i don’t know what one is. I don’t think they are anything good. thanks for the warning!!!!
Chupacabra literally means “Goat Sucker” in Spanish/Mexican, but they eat/suck blood from anything else. So, like I said – KEEP THE HUMANS INSIDE!!! You’ll protect them, right? 🙂
I’m not bringing those goats in the house! they’re on their own. But I’ll take care of the human folks. You stay safe up there where you are!
🙂
Another good one. So many good books, so little time!
If only it was “So many good books, so much time!” 😀
INteresting. I like pirates and reading. I do like the trailer! God review, Erik. You may have the hang of it 😆
ARR! Me like pirates and readin’ too! Thank’e Miz Moriz! Arrgh! 😉
What an awesome trailer! This sounds like a fantastic adventure! I love that the MC is such a reader. 🙂 Can’t wait to check this one out!
This is an AWESOME book Ms. Peterson!
