THE LION IS KING OF THE JUNGLE! THE GREAT WHITE SHARK IS SOVEREIGN OF THE SEA! THE TIMBER WOLF IS EMPEROR OF THE FOREST!
But… It’s lonely at the top of the food chain. It’s difficult to fit in, when plant eaters can be so cruel-just because you ate a relative of theirs that one time! What’s a carnivore to do?
“I’m not bad…eating meat is just what I do”
If you ever felt bad for that zebra being chased by the lion, this is the book for you! Carnivores are so misunderstood! I LOVED this book! It’s hilarious! I love it when I read such unique picture books! The carnivores try to fit in with the other animals – going vegetarian, wearing costumes, etc., and all with hysterical results! Everything about this book is uproariously funny – the book jacket, the end pages, ending, text, illustrations, everything! I love the emotions on faces in the illustrations! Dan Santat’s illustrations are awesome and Aaron Reynolds story is one you will want to read again and again.
Check out some of the inside pages –
I like the idea of the top-of-the-food-chain carnivores being misunderstood. I really enjoyed how the “plant eaters” act! I think this book is GREAT for kids 4+!
I give this book 5 out 5 bookworms!
And now, I have an AWESOME deal for you! A GIVEAWAY!!!
A Carnivores Prize Pack! You get a copy of the book, a poster, and some book marks!

Tiger
GRRRRR-ATE! 😉
My dog, Madeleine, who was kind enough to bring home a rabbit the other day.
Isn’t she such a good carnivore? Yes, she IS! 😀
Great review, Erik!
I was lucky enough to see this book on the big screen at SCBWI LA…it’s hilarious and the illustrations are fantastic.
I’d have to agree with you…I think my favorite carnivore is Dan Santat in a shark suit.
But if I have to pick a real one, I’m going with a crocodile.
They’re scary and I hope I never cross paths with one.
Good luck on the Accelerated Reader Challenge too…looks like you’re off to a good start!
Thank you for visiting my blog, Ms. Davis! I agree with you agreeing with me that our favorite carnivore is Dan Santat! 😀 Please come again!
This reminds me of the sharks Bruce and trio from Finding Nemo as they try to rehab themselves. “Fish are friends, not food.” Too hilarious. But hey, carnivores are carnivores.
As much as it makes me cringe to watch a lion chase a gazelle and tear it to shreds, that lion is such a beautiful creature…all feline, prowess and power.
I LOVE that group! 😀
A lion of course, such a mighty, majestic, meat-eating mammal. 😉
ROOOOOOAR! 😉
I want this book! Aaron Reynolds and Dan Santant together is a deal sealer! I absolutely adore Aaron’s humor so I know this book will not disappoint, especially since you gave it a 5 book rating. I watched the video trailer and it cracked me up. Love Dan’s droll humor. My favorite carnivore is the shark. I’m a dental hygienist by trade so I am partial to those with pretty white, sharp teeth. And sharks have rows of them!
“That takes me a half hour just to FLOSS!” -Dan Santat, in a shark costume. 😉
The book sounds very entertaining and educational. Great mix for a book. Favorite carnivore — Cheetah.
I don’t get why cheetahs make excellent predators. They’re always SPOTTED! 😉 This is a great book! 🙂
But they are fast!:)
Yes they are! 😀
Congrats to Bella!
My favorite meat-eating animal is the fox – I love the colors and shape, esp. the tail. But the fox is not at the top of the chain, so as a choice I guess the wolf is better suited here. And howl can one not love wolves?
Well, you know, foxes wolf down their food… 🙂
Hahahaha!
What a hilarious video! I’m howling!! And my favorite carnivore is the canine family!!!
I’m howling too! (Is that good or bad?) I love the canine family! 😀
Howling is always a good thing!
Then, yes! I’m howling! 😀
My favorite meat-eating animals is… the shark. Those teeth are awesome. In fact, this book reminds me of the sharks in NEMO: “Fish are friends, not food.”
“Those teeth are awesome.” The more teeth to smile with, my dear! 😉
My kids are really into the TV show Wild Krats and have been spouting a bunch of stats about cheetahs lately. So I guess my favorite meat-eating animal is the cheetah. At least until they change my mind again. 😉
Thank you Ms. Dena! I really like cheet-o’s! Does that count? 😉 Please come again!
Tiger
GRRRRRRRRRR! Our school’s mascot is a tiger. (our school colors are Black and Orange! 😀 )
Cool!
😀
Gotta go w/ lions! No, tigers…Wait, bears! Yeah, bears!
Lions and tigers and bears! I like Smokey the Bear! 🙂
Hi Erik! This book looks really good. I would have to say a serval. They are sooo cute!
Serval’s ARE cute! 😀
I haven’t been reading much nonfiction books lately. This looks fun, the illustrations are striking too. Will check this one out, Erik! 🙂
This isn’t so much nonfiction as it is fiction with a slight bit of education. 🙂
Oh man that looks awesome 😀 I have always liked the black panther. Ooh… gives me shivers just thinking about it.
Oooh… I forgot about black panthers! But what about the one, the only… PINK PANTHER??? 😉
I cannot believe there is a video trailer running in theaters for this book. How terrific. Okay, Erik I would really like to win this pack.
You have now beaten me on two books in three days. You owe me! Okay, maybe not, but I would love this pack. My copy is off to the library and it was difficult to let go when the librarian was pulling. In my defense, it is never fair when a librarian yanks a book from you.
I could borrow it and forget when it is. Nah, just let me win. How exciting is this Fall season. It’s my turn to review a book first. What do yo have that I have? 😆
This is a COOL book! I will tell Josie that if she doesn’t pull your name she’s in trouble! 😉 Hmmm I have a book about little aliens that crash land on EAR-TH… 😉
My favorite meat eating animal is my shepherd/Husky puppy Sulley, who devoured a whole plate of hamburgers which were meant for our family and dinner guests.
Ooooo Sulley shall be re-named “No No Bad Dog” 😉 On second thought I like the name Sulley! Thank you for commenting on my blog! Please come again!
Thank you, I like that I just found this blog.
Thank you! 😀
I enjoyed that video, especially when the ending caught me totally off guard. So funny! 🙂
I think this is a book I should have.
It’s a great video, right? XD
