Lifetime: The Amazing Numbers in Animal Lives
by Lola M. Schaefer
Illustrated by Christopher Silas Neal
40 pages – ages 4 – 8 years
Will be Published by Chronicle Books on September 24, 2013
Taken from the inside jacket –
“In one LIFETIME a caribou will shed 10 sets of antlers,
a woodpecker will drill 30 roosting holes,
a giraffe will wear 200 spots,
a seahorse will birth 1,000 babies.
Count each one and many more as you learn about the fascinating things that can happen in just one lifetime.”
How cool is it to put math and nature together into a picture book? Ms. Schaefer wrote a book that young kids will love because of the pictures and simple text (and also the counting part – I actually tried to count the 1,000 seahorse babies… Don’t try it…) and older kids will love it because of the facts about the animals and all the information about how Ms. Schaefer used math and averages to write the book. The back pages were all the math is explained is really well done. It shows kids how cool math can be in real life. I really like the illustrations. They are realistic and have a natural feel to them, with a touch on fantasy. I like Mr. Neal’s artwork. I just figured out he did the cover of “Chains” by Laurie Halse Anderson (awesome book) and I love that cover. I would love to see more nonfiction PB done as well as this one.
I give this book 5 out of 5 bookworms!
Sounds like a very cool book! I’m pinning it:)
Thanks Mrs. Leyne!
Beautiful cover and I imagine the illustrations are outstanding. Exciting concept for a book — nature and numbers. Will have to check this one out. Great review Erik.
Thank you Ms. Tilton! 😀 I enjoyed this book!
Mom and I don’t get math very much. She wishes there was a book like this when she was little. Maybe she would have cared about numbers more. Sometimes she says, “Why do I have to say your name a hundred times before you listen?” I think it’s more like a thousand times….
Love and licks,

This sounds like just the kind of book my seven and five-year-old will love. Thank you so much for spotlighting it. 🙂
I think they WILL love it! 😀
NEED THAT BOOK! Thanks, Erik!
What? You not good at Math? 😉
Love birds AND numbers!
So do I! 😀
We must have received the same box of books! But you win again. ;( This is a great book. I love it and I also agree with you on nonfiction books. I love the nonfiction one, picture book or higher, that use humour and great illustrations when explaining their subject. Yes, we need to review more good and great non fiction books! Great review, Erik.
*heeheeheee* I am a-HEH-ed! I am a-HEH-ed! *does ridiculous slo-mo dance 😉 *
Thanks Ms. Morris!

I love books that try to cross disciplines such as science and literacy or art. I think this is a great way to teach.
I agree that it is a great way to teach! 😀
My 8-year-old son would love this. He loves math-y picture books! Math Curse is his favorite math-y picture book.
OOH! Math Curse sounds like it’s fun! 😀
And how old am I in dog years? Or people years? Or something. this book sounds fantastic! Some cool stuff. I can count to 3, but that’s about it. I’ll have to check this one out. thanks Erik!
Well, how old are you in people years? Multiply that by 7 and you have your dog years! 😀 (you can use a calculator)
This book sounds so fun. I like the way the facts about animals come out. I also like the cover- and I enjoyed the cover (and story) of Chains. What a talented illustrator!
Chains was a great book! 😀
This was a brilliant idea for a picture book! Well done!
Thanks!
