Before I get to perfect picture book Friday I want to tell you if you didn’t catch the podcast interview I did with Daniel of the Readers and Writers Paradise blog, check it out! 🙂 Daniel is another kid who loves to review books and write (he’s also a champion chess player). Click HERE to go to the podcast. Make sure to follow his blog and you can find him on Twitter HERE.
BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE! Today Josie and I get to do Stanley and Katrina’s “Word of the Week!”
Our word is PINNACLE. After you get done here, click on over to the S&K blog and check out our video about the word “pinnacle.” We did our own version of The Princess Bride. 🙂 Click HERE to go THERE.
Now on to PPBF!
Susanna Leonard Hill has a feature on her blog called Perfect Picture Book Friday. It is a list of “perfect” picture books recommended by all sorts of people. I chose this book because it is a unique story.
At The Same Moment Around The World
by Clotilde Perrin
36 pages – ages 5+
Will be published by Chronicle Books on March 11, 2014
Theme/Topic- Time zones / multicultural
Genre- Realistic Fiction
Opening and Synopsis-
“It is six o’clock in the morning in Dakar, Senegal. Keita wakes up early to help his father count the fish caught during the night.”
The story goes on to show what people all over the world are doing at that very same moment. The reader travels through each time zone to show how the whole world is connected at that one moment.
Why I liked this book-
This is a very unique book. It really draws the reader into the story by following the story around the world. I like how the pictures on the pages flow into each other, like the images below, which is really cool.
I also like how the last image is the same as the first image, just with the text on the other side of the page. It being the exact same picture shows that you have “traveled” across the entire world.
The illustrations are very well done and magnificent. I love all of the little details in them.
This book will get kids learning about the different time zones. It also gets kids thinking about another person on the other side of the world could be doing something completely different from what they’re doing at that moment. It gives a feeling of how we are all connected in the world. It is one of those books that you can read over and over and over again (well, the ending kind of sets itself up for that). Even the unusual size of the book is cool (it’s 6″x13″). Mark your calendars, the book will be published on March 11th (I got an ARC). 😀
Activities and Resources-
There is a great pull-out world map in the back of the book that shows where the different stops in the book are.
Math is Fun has an interactive time zone map and a graphic explaining why we need timezones. Click HERE.
You can also get a world map (or a map of the country you live in) out that has time zones on it and have your kids choose a couple of places. Figure out what time it is there and try to think about what people may be doing there.

Tahnks for Daniel’s blog address Erik, I’m now following him too 😀
Thanks, your website is really cool too 🙂
You are welcome! 🙂
This looks like a fabulous picture book! I would love to read this one, and I bet my grandson would be fascinated, too. Thanks for the interesting review, Erik. 🙂
It is a great book, CGLynn! 😀
The sample illustrations are very beautiful. Learning the differences of what’s happening around the world at the same time is even an eye-opener for adults so I can see this as educational and fun for little ones and a good reminder for us bigger kids 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
It is an awesome book, Ms. Brown. 🙂
Looks like a neat book. With technology, we can *see* what each is doing around the world 🙂
Thanks Ms. Cho! It is a neat book!
What a fascinating idea for a book!! I’m amazed by the variety of PBs that you review. Do you have some special connection with a librarian or something? 😉 I appreciate your descriptions of the artwork and will definitely look for this one. I love illustrations that are detailed…sadly, I don’t think I have the patience to do that kind. Also I like your interview with your friend and the word of the day. It is wonderful to see young people being creative and motivated. That’s when the internet is such a sensational vehicle for good as well as uniting us like your PB today.
🙂 I got a big box o’ books for review from a publisher. This one really stuck out from the rest. I thought it was really well done. Thanks Ms. Miller!
What a cool book! Thanks for the recommendation.
Thanks for stopping by!
First of all, what a fantastic picture book! Sounds like a crazy cool concept and one we all would love, here! We will mark out calendars for sure. Thanks for sharing it ahead of time. You did really well with Daniel’s interview, and, of course, you set the bar crazy high for our future Word of the Week guests. “You are such a Pinnacle!” Wait, that might actually work for you, who does well in all he does….hmmm…. 🙂

It is a very cool book! Thanks for stopping by Daniel’s blog. he is a great guy. 🙂 Wait – no YOU’RE a pinnacle! 😀
This sounds like an especially great book for before kids travel (or get relo’ed). Thanks for another great book introduction (noting March 11 release on the calendar).
Thanks Ms. Greenley! 🙂
LOVED the pinnacle movie! It’s been so long since we watched “The Princess Bride” that my boys didn’t really get the spoof, but they laughed at Erik’s moustache. I think tonight is family movie night. 😉
Hee Hee – Glad you liked it! 🙂
what a cool idea for a book!
Thanks for your comment! 🙂
This book is a winner. I love the concept of how we are all connected and the illustrations look beautiful! Will have to look it up!
The artwork is great! Thanks Ms. Tilton!
I love the illustrations and the concept. Thanks for telling me about it.
Thank you for your comment! 🙂
I’m really intrigued by the illustrations and your description! Will definitely look for this one!
The illustrations are terrific as is the idea behind the book!
Another SuperKid to howl about! I’m now following Daniel on twitter. Your “word of the week” video was very cute. I think you have not reached the pinnacle of your career. Whatever that career may be……writer, doctor, lawyer or ruler of the world.
The picture book looks amazing! So unique! Thanks for the great review SuperKid Erik!
I’ve never but called a “SuperKid” before, but I think I can get used to it!
Thank you Lobo! 🙂
GREAT VIDEO!!! You two are quite the team!
Your pick this week has the look of Marc Chagall to it. Don’t expect you to know his work, but sure would be impressed if you googled him! My library probably has this on order, biut I may go in and demand it, just in case!
Thanks, I’m glad you liked the interview. Although it isn’t very hard when it’s Erik you’re interviewing 🙂
Quite right!
Hmm don’t know Marc Chagall will definitely Google! I think you’d love the illustrations in this book and how they run into each other. 🙂
Even more intrigued now!
🙂
I love this topic and this book would be a great match with http://marilynsinger.net/books/nine-oclock-lullaby/
Thanks for the book recommendation! Will check it out! 🙂
Nice picture book. Have yet to get to it. Plsssst! Nice review. Going to check out Josie and her word of the week. Did you say you are helping her? You’re a good big brother! 🙂
I am an AWESOME brother! 😛
This is a fascinating concept. I am slapping my forehead right now and saying, “why didn’t I think of that” (though I’m sure my execution would not be nearly as fabulous). You are so lucky to be able to review this before it’s officially released. I hope I can convince my library to buy it. Thanks Erik!
I do that a lot – Why didn’t I think of that?!!! 🙂 I knew you’d like my pick this week Ms. Larson! 🙂
Sounds like a lovely book — great concept of traveling time zones to see what different people are up to. The art looks beautiful and I love the author’s name :).
Enjoyed your interview with Daniel and your Word of the Day video with Josie! Love the mustache (more, please)!
I really liked everything about the book. I thought it was very well done. THanks for checking out the interview and our video. 🙂
I just saw yours and Josie’s video over at Stanley&Katrina.com. REALLY well done, guys! 😀
And this book—great cover and illustrations and what a fresh, entertaining, useful idea. Can’t wait to see it on the shelves 🙂
Thank you Ms. Marie! 🙂 I am glad you liked our video! 😀
Erik, you’re in a very polite mood today with the many Ms./Mrs./Mr./Dr. addresses 🙂 Of course, Marie is my middle name 😉 Muwahahahahaaaaaaa…
And yes, THE SILVER BUTTON is a great book—-I think 😀
Beautiful book, Erik and I loved your review. Making a note to look out for it when it’s released. Isn’t it wonderful to think of what others are doing at just that precise moment miles away on the other side of the world… 🙂
I think you would like it, Ms. Tulloch! 🙂
I’m hoping my library has this one on order, so I can get in line for it. A great topic for kids to explore (plus the world!).
It is a great book, Ms. Jensen. 😀
Well, this post is just full of fun stuff!!!! The book sounds pretty cool. I don’t understand time. It has no real meaning for me. But I like the idea of knowing what people all over the world are doing at any given moment. Pretty cool. Thanks for sharing all the fun!
When I posted my first comment, this book reminded me of another I read, but I just couldn’t pull up the title clearly. Just now I was able to find it on my Goodreads list. It’s about the many things that can happen all over the place—in a single second. I loved it and thought it was REALLY well done. THE SILVER BUTTON by Bob Graham 🙂
That sounds like a great book! 🙂
It is a great book Rhythm! 🙂
I have been waiting for this one to be released. THanks for the review. Now I know it will be worth the wait.
It’s a really great book! 🙂
Now I understand why we don’t have a copy of this book, it’s yet to be published! It looks gorgeous, Erik, and just perfect as part of my text-set in my multicultural class. I will alert our librarians about this title so we can get a copy the next time I run my course again. Have you read Mirror by Jeannie Baker yet? Wordless picturebook that has basically the same concept.
You should get it ASAP! 😀
Thank you! 😀
