I get to give away a copy of Tea with Grandpa! Read to the end! 🙂
Today is Perfect Picture Book Friday!
Susanna Leonard Hill has a feature on her blog called Perfect Picture Book Friday. It is a list of “perfect” picture books recommended by all sorts of people. I chose this book because I love how it shows a little girl having a good time with her grandpa and I don’t see a lot of grandpa/granddaughter books. 🙂 Plus, the twist at the end is great!
Tea with Grandpa
by Barney Saltzberg
40 pages – ages 5+
Published by Roaring Brook Press on April 15, 2014
Theme/Topic- grandparents/technology
Genre- Realistic fiction
Opening and Synopsis-
Publisher’s description: “Tea with Grandpa is a sweetly simple, rhyming picture book by acclaimed author/artist Barney Saltzberg. In this story, a little girl tells us about her daily tea ritual with her grandfather where they sing, tell stories, laugh and clink their teacups. When it’s time to say goodbye, it won’t be for long because with the help of their computers and a video chat, Grandpa is never too far away to have tea.”
Opening:
“Every day at half past three…
Me and Grandpa.
Time for tea.”
Why I liked this book- I first saw the trailer for “Tea with Grandpa” on twitter. After I saw it, I thought it looked cute so I put it on my “To Be Read” list. Check out the trailer –
I thought it was cute. When I got the book and (here comes a spoiler!) and saw that the whole “tea party” was virtual – meaning the little girl and her grandpa were Skypeing or doing a Google hangout or something similar, I thought the idea for the book was brilliant! You don’t know until the end that it’s all over the computer -very cool. There are a lot of kids who don’t live close to their grandparents and I think a lot of kids and parents can relate to this story.
The rhyme in the book is wonderful and the soft illustrations go very well with the story.

Yes this sounds so sweet I would love to win one for my niece to remember her papaw by.
You are in for the drawing! 🙂
Thanks for the link love, Erik! Am anxious to see this book — sounds like just my cup of tea (sorry, couldn’t resist) . . . 🙂
Sure Ms. Rattigan! I love your posts about tea (I’m drinking a cup right now! 🙂 )I think this book is your cup of tea *hee hee* ! Maybe you’ll win it! 🙂
This is absolutely adorable. I don’t need to win the copy, though. My little girl is now taller than I am (though she does drink tea with me often) and my boys wouldn’t sit through a tea part I served it with Coke. 🙂
Yeah, I don’t think I’d do a tea party – maybe a camp fire with tea! 🙂
I enjoyed reading your review of this lovely book. The connection between grandkids and grandparents is so important and glad to see a new book that celebrates this :))
Thank you Ms. Wildermuth! Thank you for visiting my blog! Please come again! 🙂
I have a friend who skypes daily with her granddaughter. I’m going to recommend this to her.
This is perfect for your friend! 🙂 Thank you for your comment! Pleas come again!
Reminds me of my children and husband, who takes many lengthy business trips. What would we do without Skype and FaceTime?
They are great aren’t they? 🙂
What a great little book! That Skyping is such a wonder! We do a lot of that with our Princesses in California. They read books to me and the Mom Person reads bedtime stories to them. Having a tea party sounds like an excellent thing to do! We’ll have to try this out. This seems to be the day for tea on the internet — you might check this out – http://toffeefee.wordpress.com/2014/05/02/tea-and-tradition/
That’s awesome Rhythm! I bet you’d like this book. 🙂 I’m going to check out that link! 🙂
Awwww. I love the book trailer and the book looks adorable. Who could resist tea with Grandpa? Not me! Skype is great for staying in touch with loved ones. : )
The book trailer is what sold me on it, but the twist in the book is so cool! 🙂
What a wonderful book! I just love the concept and I’m so glad you told me the end. I want to do this with my grandson. Perfect. 🙂
That is a great idea! 🙂 Thanks Ms. Bowan-Jahn!
I like that book! I want to win. Mom always lets me lick the last of her tea from the bottom of the cup. Mmmmm…
Love and licks,
Cupcake
You’re in it to win it Cupcake! 🙂
Great choice (I thought about posting this one too! Haha!).
Great minds think alike! 🙂
Super trailer and I have been wanting to read a review about this one. Thanks, Erik.
Thank you Miss Marple! 🙂
This is such a wonderful story about a relationship between a girl and her grandpa. Very special.
It has a very nice feeling to the story and it makes it modern with the video chat thing in it. 🙂
That trailer was adorable, Erik! And I thought of Jams straight away too.
Sounds like a wonderful book. I’d like to win it.
Thank you Ms. Nichols! You are in to win! 🙂
I just read this book the other day when I was doing my Barnes Browse to catch up, and it IS adorable 🙂 It seems “Tea” books have been quite the rage with this one, Ame Dyckman’s TEA PARTY RULES and Molly Idle’s TEA REX. Love them ALL! 😀
I really like the technology twist with this one too! 🙂
We’ve done our share of Skyping and now Face-timing. Brilliant concept for a book!
I agree! 😀
That video complete charmed me.
Gah. I meant “completely.”
🙂
🙂 That’s why I wanted to review the book!
I’d like to win it!
You’re in! 😀
I love the sound of this book. We Skype grandparents a lot but I’ve never thought about having tea with them (although we have read stories). I would love to be included in the draw 🙂
Thank you for stopping by my blog! You are in the drawing! Please come again! 🙂
One of my greatest joys is that I live beside my granddaughter. Another of my greatest joys is that she helps me write my books. She is 4, and is definitely the boos ’round here. She loves technology and plays princess games on my computer (when allowed). What a nice idea, this book is. I suspect that lots of grandparents will be forced into learning technology in order to keep up with rapidly changing times and vast distances.
I think SKYPE is a great thing! We SKYPE with my grandmom! 🙂
I agree with you about Jama hosting a fabulous tea party all the time. 🙂
