Perfect Picture Book Friday! Polar Bear’s Underwear by tupera tupera

Susanna Leonard Hill has a feature on her blog called Perfect Picture Book Friday. It is a list of “perfect” picture books recommended by all sorts of people. I chose this book because it is a really funny story and the title hooked me. 😉

Theme/Topic- Lost underwear Matching / finding things

Genre- Fiction

Opening and Synopsis- Opening – “Poor Polar Bear! He can’t find his underwear!

Synopsis – From Goodreads: “Polar Bear has lost his underwear! Where could it be? There’s only one thing to do: Remove the book’s underwear-shaped bellyband to find the missing pair! Is that Polar Bear’s underwear? No, it’s Zebra’s—see the colorful stripes? What about that itty-bitty pair? No, those belong to Butterfly! And so the search continues, with every page revealing an animal in eye-popping undies.

Why I liked this book- This is a funny picture book that shows animals walking around in their underwear. Polar Bear has lost his underwear, and can’t remember what it looks like, so he and his friend mouse (wearing red undies) set out to find it! They find lots of underwear, but they all belong to different animals! Seeing what the animals are doing, and the little bit of text about it (for example: Pig’s underwear – “Nom nom nom. It’s Pig’s underwear!” (pig is eating)), will have young kids cracking up! The illustrations are slightly wacky, and will make kids laugh! This book team really makes it work! This is a marvelous picture book!

Activities and Resources-

Chronicle Books has a free activity kit to go along with this book! Click HERE to get it.

You can design another animal’s underwear, based on how they look, what they [can] eat, etc.! What would it look like?

  1. My sort of fun picture book, Erik, but I know I would wear it down, by pulling off all that underwear!

  2. This is a great entertaining book. Wasn’t sure whether the message was to get young children interested in wearing undies, or it just an absurd and funny book. I’m sure it’s hilarious.

  3. Oh! Oh! Oh! So funny AND this is giving me a brilliant idea for a PB! Thanks, Erik!

  4. Awesome! This is a book for us! Animals + Underwear = Win! Lovely! I look forward to reading it. It’ll be a hit here.

  5. Oh, does this EVER look fun! And the title gave ME a giggle (actually, more of a guffaw) too. Thanks, Erik!

  6. Such a fun book!

  7. Underwear books are very popular! Thanks for suggesting another one to read.

  8. What’s better than a poodle in polka-dotted undies? Nuthin’. That’s what! Awesome!

    Love and licks,

  9. Dang it! A point for you. I love your poodle. You are a pretty good doodler. I agree this book is a hoot (just not soon enough, it seems). 🙂

  10. A book just to be silly? (because… “underwear”!) or an underhanded attempt to turn youngsters into fashion designers? I can just hear the jokes now:
“Look! I just saw a polar bear under there!”
    “Under where?”
    “Ha-ha! made you say underwear!”

  11. Polar Bear strikes me as a polkadot boxers kind a guy.

  12. I haven’t seen this book before. Sounds very funny. My girls would love it.

  13. There’s something about underpants in picture books (and chapter books) that I just find amusing. Is it just me? lol
