Susanna Leonard Hill has a feature on her blog called Perfect Picture Book Friday. It is a list of “perfect” picture books recommended by all sorts of people. I chose this book because it is a perfect book for Spring!
by Dianna Hutts Aston
Illustrated by Sylvia Long
40 pages – ages 5+
Published by Chronicle Books on April 14, 2015
Theme/Topic- Nests / biodiversity
Genre- nonfiction
Opening and Synopsis- Opening – “A nest is noisy. It is a nursery of chirp-chirping…”
Synopsis – From Chronicle Books: “From the award-winning creators of An Egg Is Quiet, A Seed Is Sleepy, A Butterfly Is Patient, and A Rock Is Lively comes this gorgeous and informative look at the fascinating world of nests. From tiny bee hummingbird nests to orangutan nests high in the rainforest canopy, an incredible variety of nests are showcased here in all their splendor. Poetic in voice and elegant in design, this carefully researched book introduces children to a captivating array of nest facts and will spark the imaginations of children whether in a classroom reading circle or on a parent’s lap. ”
Why I liked this book- This is a great book for this time of year! First off the illustrations are something you could look at for hours. They are so detailed and informative. I really like that the book doesn’t focus on bird’s nests (which is what I thought it was going to be) but has ALL kinds of nests. Bees, alligators, platypus and more! The book is educational and entertaining. I can see teachers and parents using this book to talk about ecosystems and biodiversity.
Activities and Resources-
Check out one of the many “nest cams” on the internet! There are owl cams (short for camera), hawk cams and eagle cams. Here is an eagle cam in Hanover PA – click HERE. If you check it out you’ll see two eaglets and their parents. My family has been watching them grow. Plus you can see the awesome nest they built and how they use it.
Chronicle Books has a teacher’s guide and activity pack to go with this book. Click HERE to get it.
PBS Kids has a great build your own bird’s nest activity. Click HERE to get it.

A Nest is Noisy looks like a perfect spring PB. Our neighbor has a pine tree that I nicknamed the Bird Party Tree. SO LOUD! Thanks for sharing.
I would love to see (or would it be “hear”? 😉 ) that tree! 🙂 The Nest is Noisy is a great PB! 😀
Whadya mean you were glad it wasn’t all about bird’s nests?! Only teasing! Looks marvelous! Chirp!
Thank you! Peep! 😉
Great one for Spring, Erik!
Thanks, Ms. Johnson! 😀
This really looks gorgeous. I love this idea.
It’s a marvelous book!
Lovely choice for Spring. I love quiet and contemplative books that you want to spend time with. Great to show different kinds of nests. Loved the Eagle cam. Used to write newspaper/magazine articles on the declining eagle population in Ohio in the 1970s.
Thank you Mrs. Tilton! 🙂
I have the some of the other books in this series – but did not know about the nest book. Will have to add it to the collection – a great book for Spring learning in kindergarten. Thanks Erik.
I’m glad I could help! 😀
I’m still waiting for A Poop is Stinky.
Ahem. I’ll see myself out.
Unseemly….
You keep making me snort.
Remember – we have High Tea with the Queen of England tomorrow, so make sure to make as many fart jokes as possible! 😉
Sounds like a nice way to learn. Little kids will love this.
Yes they will! 😀
This looks clever – and I NEVER would have thought of nests of creatures besides birds. You’ve got me fascinated. Great pick, Erik. Thanks!
Thanks Ms. Sher! I’m glad you like it! 😀
Looks like a great nonfiction PB! We love books that teach kiddos about nature.
They’re great, right? 🙂
How fascinating. I bet I could learn a lot!
I wasn’t able to see the eagle cam video but it sounds like a very cute and fun book for kids.
It’s a marvelous book! 😀
I do, I do, I dooooo love this book. And the eagle cam is amazing! I’ve never seen eagle chicks before. Their wings are huge compared to the rest of their bodies. It must take some time for them to figure out how to control them. 😀
It’s a great book! And Eagle Cam. 🙂
This looks like a beautiful book Erik. Anything to get kids to appreciate nature is a wonderful thing 🙂
You are exactly right! 😀
Nests are noisy too! The chirping goes on constantly 🙂
Exactly! But there is much more… 😉
Nice review. I am thinking my computer troubles are the perfect excuse for you to fly (no pun intended haha), ahead. Well played. A really nice choice with the sun finally shining and birds returning. 🙂
Hey, kid!
EriK!
Are you there?
What no reply?!
Aw, shucks, I must have been too late. Dang!
Well, on the next missed post. 🙂
“Well, on [to] the next missed post 🙂 ” OOPS!
😉
I’m sorry I have been off my computer, playing outside. I can assure you it won’t happen again. 😉
Thank you Ms. Morris! What – ME, take advantage of it? WHO would even THINK that??? 😉
