Perfect Picture Book Friday! Tea with Oliver by Mika Song

Susanna Leonard Hill has a feature on her blog called Perfect Picture Book Friday. It is a list of “perfect” picture books recommended by all sorts of people. I chose this book because it is a great story about friendship and tea (both excellent things!).

Tea with Oliver
By Mika Song
40 pages – ages 5+

Published by HarperCollins on August 8, 2017

Theme/Topic- Friendship
Genre- Fiction
Opening and Synopsis- Opening: “Oliver talks to himself a lot. “It’s a nice day for tea, but who will have tea with me?”

Synopsis from Publisher: “Oliver is not like other cats. He likes cookies and tea and just wants a friend to share them with.
Philbert is the shy mouse who lives under Oliver’s couch. He tries to get Oliver’s attention by writing him notes, but Oliver doesn’t notice little Philbert. When a full-on cat party erupts at Oliver’s apartment, brave Philbert decides this is his big chance to finally introduce himself to Oliver.”

What I Thought- This is a fabulous debut from Song, with soft illustrations and a smiley message. I really like how the story has a warm feeling to it, as the book is ultimately a tale of friendship. The reader experiences Philbert’s disappointment as Oliver inadvertently ignores him, and the reader also feels sorry for Oliver as he is lonely and doesn’t realize he has a close friend (literally!). Song has written a great book that kids will love – I really like how it focuses on the softer, subtle sides of friendship; how Oliver and Philbert enjoy having tea and cookies together and are happy. I hope kids can realize that they can find friendship in the most unlikeliest of places!

  1. *gulp* Can this happen??? Once one of my treats went under the couch and I went in after it. If I ever saw a mouse under there, I just don’t know WHAT I’d have done! Plus, what if he tried to eat my treat!? #notcool

    Love and licks,

  2. Lovely story about friendship! Great message for kids about finding friends. Enjoyed your review!
