Theme/Topic: Self-esteem, Positivity
Opening: “Oskar can jump almost as high as Mo…”
Synopsis from Publisher: “Oskar the raven is back, and this time the beloved young bird is finding out all the things he can do.
Britta Teckentrup has established herself as one of the most popular children’s book authors today. Her vibrant, collage based illustrations have made her books a favorite in homes, schools, and libraries. And her character, Oskar, based on her family cat of the same name, is the perfect companion for young readers. This new book sends a simple, positive message that will empower kids to claim their own accomplishments. Tie a shoe? Brush their teeth? Wash their dishes? Bounce a ball? If Oskar can do it, they can too. Fans of Oskar’s adventures will be thrilled to discover their friend is back with a new story. And readers meeting Oskar for the first time will discover a delightful, relatable character who makes them feel good about themselves and the world around them.”
What I Thought: I love the simplicity of this book – the text is told with most sentences starting with “Oskar can…” and Oskar doing somethings very well and somethings okay (I loved that Oskar wasn’t shown as perfect!). The last sentence brings the question to the reader, saying “What can you do?” – which was a nice way to tie it all in. The illustrations are a collage-style that are very easy to follow and look fantastic.
The story is full of simple positivity that I think needs to be seen more, so I love Teckentrup’s commitment to that. I wholeheartedly recommend this picture book!
